This is a territory I try to stay out of because a) I'm not really that educated in it and b) it just makes me mad. But in light of recent events (several people I know being laid off) I've had a few thoughts. So here we go.
The current situation sucks. No one is arguing that with you. Yes you have an education and you should be able to get a better job than you had prior to this education (college grads = more money, right? Nope, sorry). Yes you have certain credentials. Here's the deal though, you just graduated! Other people, people with families to support and debt to pay and the like, they have the same credentials you have BUT they have experience you don't have! And yes, you're thinking that you'll never get experience if people won't hire you, but given that the economy is not what it use to be, you're going to have to get the experience the old fashioned way (Work). Can't get hired doing the jobs you want? Do jobs you don't want to do. You may be over qualified but it's experience and if that's what's separating you from the guy who has been lucky enough to not be laid off, then get in there and get it. Maybe it's not in the field you want to be in, but it shows future employers that instead of being a dead beat during the recession you at least did what you could.
Just because we've graduated from college doesn't mean we're guaranteed a position. Sure our older siblings were able to get cushy positions when they got out, but the economy was in a different place then. At that time employers were hiring any old jackass because there weren't enough people to necessarily do the jobs that needed to be done. NOW there's TOO MANY people that are qualified and great for the position but the employer can't afford to hire them ALL! So that kid that just got out of school, not looking as good as that man in his 40s with three kids and a house with 20 years experience in his field (or maybe just 10 years in that field, but other jobs showing his dedication to work, any old work, during the 10 years prior).
I'm not saying you guys are whining or don't have a basis to be pissed. Rather I'm saying that everyone knows it sucks. Everyone understands what you're saying. But no one can fix it for you. There is no easy fix right now. The only thing to do is to look at what you have and see where that gets you for the next few months..maybe the next year. Maybe by taking that job you think is shit, you'll meet your future employer.
And I'm done. I realize this is pointless because I will only make my friends mad at me. They will read this and think, "Great for you to say, but you're in Grad School, you don't have to deal with this. You don't know what it's like" . No, I don't know what it's like. Yes I am still in school. And thank god. Because otherwise I'd be in the crappy position of having to take a job I don't want just so I can have a job until the economy turns around. That is shitty.
